After parents raised questions with the San Marino Unified School District about the safety of two cell phone towers on district property, a public study session was held Tuesday night to present expert findings and gather public comment.
“For both the Board and me, the top priority has, is, and will continue to be the health and safety of our students, said Superintendent Loren Kleinrock in a statement. “We have gone out of our way to seek out experts to share relevant research and findings to ensure that the Board has as much information, based on the best science available, in order to determine whether it must make any new decisions regarding the cell towers.”
Among the panel of experts at Tuesday’s Huntington Middle School study session was a former consultant for the World Health Organization, Kenneth Foster, Ph.D.
Another third party consultant shared that the radiation levels on the SMUSD campus ranged from 4,700 to 200,000 times less than the current FCC standard, according to Kleinrock’s statement.
Because radiation levels were found to be in compliance and well below the FCC standard, Kleinrock noted that the Board was presented with possible difficulties and pitfalls of potential litigation.
In the coming weeks, the SMUSD Board of Education plans to continue discussions with the current cell phone lessees and make a decision on the future of the towers based on the presented science and evidence.
